The British term cockney literally means a“cock’s egg,”deriving from the Middle English cokeney. The word first meant a foolish child or a foolish person who did not know a good egg from a cock’s egg(a small egg with no yolk).Country people next applied the term to city people in general, then to Londoners, and finally to London East Enders, people said to be born within sound of the bells of St.Mary—le—Bow(Bow Belts)who share a characteristic accent called Cockney.Actually, people who speak Cockney are found in London far out of earshot of Bow Bells.
